When a patient’s condition is critical, and their loved ones wish to bring them home safely, every second and every medical decision matters. Recently, Life Savers Ambulance Services accomplished yet another complex and high-risk ICU Train Ambulance transfer — safely shifting a 57-year-old female patient from Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, Delhi, to Ranchi, Jharkhand, her native town. The journey was not just a transportation effort but a fully monitored mobile hospital transfer across states.

Patient’s Critical Medical Condition

The patient was a known case of Bronchial Asthma and was admitted with severe respiratory distress, high-grade fever, generalized weakness, and worsening shortness of breath. Over time, her condition deteriorated into Acute Respiratory Failure, eventually leading to ARDS (Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome) and Multi-Organ Dysfunction Syndrome (MODS).

She was tracheostomized and required continuous oxygen and airway management under close ICU monitoring. Despite best efforts, she experienced weaning difficulty due to axonal motor neuropathy, which affected her muscle strength and recovery rate.

Her HRCT Thorax revealed extensive post-ARDS changes, organising pneumonia, and Interstitial Lung Disease (ILD) patterns — all signs of long-term lung damage following severe respiratory illness. Additionally, a thin rim of left-sided pneumothorax was detected, for which an ICD (Intercostal Drain) tube was inserted to prevent further lung collapse.

Given her fragile respiratory status and ongoing lung complications, her family wished to shift her to Ranchi for further care in a comfortable environment near home.

Life Savers’ Expert Intervention

After consulting with the treating doctors and the patient’s family, Life Savers Ambulance Services was approached for a long-distance ICU transfer. Considering her clinical complexity and the need for uninterrupted critical care, the Train Ambulance was chosen as the safest and most stable mode of transport.

A dedicated medical team comprising a critical care doctor, trained paramedic, and support staff was assigned. Before the journey, a detailed pre-transfer assessment was conducted in coordination with Sir Ganga Ram Hospital’s ICU team, ensuring every medical requirement was addressed.

Train Ambulance Setup – A Moving ICU

The Life Savers Train ICU Ambulance was customized to replicate a hospital ICU environment, providing continuous monitoring and care throughout the journey. The setup included:

  • Advanced ICU monitors tracking ECG, SpO₂, BP, and respiratory rate
  • Infusion pumps for continuous administration of critical medications
  • Portable suction machine and oxygen cylinders for airway management
  • Emergency drug kit, defibrillator, and airway support equipment
  • Facility for prone positioning and recruitment maneuvers if required

The train compartment was converted into a private, sterile ICU cabin with sufficient space for the patient, medical equipment, and attending staff. Constant communication was maintained with the control team to ensure smooth coordination throughout the journey.

Patient Monitoring During Transit

Throughout the journey from Delhi to Ranchi, the medical team continuously monitored the patient’s vital parameters such as heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen saturation, and respiratory function.

Regular suctioning, airway management, and oxygen therapy were carried out to maintain stability. The medical team also administered IV medications and supportive treatments as prescribed by her doctors.

Despite her fragile respiratory condition and ICD drainage, the patient remained hemodynamically stable throughout the journey. The professional handling by the Life Savers team ensured a smooth and safe transfer without any complications.

Safe Arrival at Native Place

After covering a long journey spanning multiple states, the patient safely reached Ranchi, her hometown, where arrangements were already made for her hospital admission. The ground ambulance team received the patient at the railway station and ensured a seamless handover to the local medical facility.

The patient’s family expressed deep gratitude for the care, professionalism, and compassion shown by the Life Savers team throughout the process.
