Long-distance transfer of elderly oncology patients with limited mobility requires pressure care, oxygen support, and continuous monitoring. Life Savers Ambulance Services coordinated a structured ICU Train Ambulance transfer to ensure safe and dignified intercity transport.

Case Overview

A 78-year-old female patient was shifted from Mangalore to Chennai via an ICU Train Ambulance arranged by Life Savers Ambulance Services. The transfer was conducted as a bed-to-bed train ambulance transport, ensuring continuity of medical supervision throughout the journey.

Patient Condition

At the time of transfer, the patient had:

  • Hepatic carcinoma requiring ongoing oncological management
  • Continuous oxygen requirement of 2 L/min
  • Third-degree pressure ulcers (bed sores) requiring specialized wound care
  • Marked frailty due to advanced age and chronic illness

Third-degree bed sores involve deep tissue injury extending through the dermis, posing high risks of infection, pain, and further tissue breakdown if not managed carefully during prolonged transport.

Transport Decision

A Rail Ambulance Service in India was selected because:

  • It provides a smoother ride compared to long road journeys
  • Adequate space allows pressure sore care and repositioning
  • Continuous oxygen therapy can be maintained reliably
  • It is clinically suitable for stable but high-dependency patients

The goal was to minimize movement stress while ensuring structured medical oversight.

Medical Setup OnboardThe Life Savers ICU Train Ambulance was equipped with:

  • Continuous oxygen supply with backup
  • Multi-parameter monitoring for vital signs
  • Pressure-relief bedding and positioning aids
  • Wound care supplies for ongoing ulcer management
  • Emergency medications and basic life support equipment

An experienced medical escort team monitored the patient throughout the journey.

Care During Transit

During the Mangalore to Chennai transfer:

  • Oxygen saturation was maintained on 2 L/min
  • Regular position adjustments were performed to reduce pressure injury progression
  • Wound sites were assessed periodically
  • Pain and comfort levels were closely observed

The stable rail environment allowed careful handling without sudden jerks or excessive vibration.

Arrival and Handover

Upon arrival in Chennai, a pre-arranged ground ambulance completed the final leg of the bed-to-bed transfer. A detailed clinical handover was provided to the receiving medical team, including oxygen requirements, wound status, and overall clinical observations.

Clinical Perspective

Elderly oncology patients with advanced pressure injuries benefit from ICU Train Ambulance transport when long-distance relocation is required. Adequate space, structured positioning, and continuous oxygen support reduce complications during transit. Life Savers Ambulance Services continues to provide clinically sound and dignified rail ambulance solutions for complex, high-dependency patients requiring safe intercity transfer.
